What is The New York City Housing Authority Section 8 Housing Choice Program ?

Here is the good news.The Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government’s program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent and safe housing.A family that is issued a housing choice voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit on their own.This unit may include the family’s present residence which is great for family's that have children as a move will certainly be disruptive to children.
Here is the BAD news .
The demand is high for subsidized housing assistance in New York City .
Many families and individuals have turned to the Section 8 program in hopes to access affordable housing. Unfortunately as of December 10, 2009, NYCHA is no longer processing any new Section 8 applications. due to a lack of sufficient funding , the New York City Housing Authority is no longer accepting any new Section 8 voucher applications or process existing Section 8 vouchers.DID YOU KNOW that Section 8 vouchers that have been assigned to applicants who have not yet secured an apartment have been terminated and will not be honored.Fantastic right ?

You can still apply for Section 8 Housing Assistance if your situation is considered an emergency.If you are a Victim of Domestic Violence or referred by the District Attorney’s Office or the Administration for Children’s Services then you a shot - but if your situation does not fall under those 3 category's the section 8 waiting list is closed to you.
NYCHA has stated that should sufficient Section 8 funding become available in the future , current voucher holders will be given priority to have their vouchers restored.Basically do not hold your breath !
